How to Clean a JanSport

Let's keep it clean out there, everybody. Whether you need a spot clean or generally spruce up your bag or backpack, we've got the how-to right here.

Step 1: Unload

Take everything out of each and every pocket. Turn the bag inside out or upside down and shake it over a bin to remove the little bits of dust and debris. Super committed? Use the hose attachment on your vacuum to get at the base and corners.

Step 2: Clean

First, back away from the washing machine. To maintain the shape and finish of your bag, we recommend cleaning by hand. For our Cordura and 600D Polyester Fabrics (like the Right Pack, Big Student and SuperBreak), use cool water with a soft damp cloth to wipe down the interior and exterior of your pack, Never use bleach or harsh detergents on your bag. And remember to avoid any suede or leather trim on your pack as these areas could discolour if they get wet.

Step 3: Dry

If you used water to wash your fabric pack, hang your pack to dry completely before putting it into action again.

Step 4: Adventure On

For ongoing maintenance, consider a monthly routine of a quick wipe-down or brushing. With proper care, your JanSport bag will be with you for a lifetime of exploration.

What does “30 year warranty” mean?

Our products are warranted for 30 years in Europe, for specific guidelines on repair or replacement please read our full warranty policy.

How to make sure your pack fits in 4 easy steps
Your JanSport pack is engineered for peak performance on the trail and off. Understanding the technology behind the features lets you make the most of your pack.

1. Torso Length
Measuring your torso is simple, and you’ll probably need some assistance. Using a soft tape measure, measure the length from the seventh vertebrae (creates a bump at the base of your neck) along the curve of your spine to your iliac crest. (the top of your hip bones). JanSport fit ranges are listed by pack. Once you know your torso length select the appropriate pack within your range.

2.Waist belt
Load the pack with 10-15 kgs. You can use anything to load the pack, water bottles work pretty well . . . just be sure they have water in them. Once you have weight in the pack put it on. Lean forward and tighten the waist belt. Remember your illiac crest? To fit the waist belt properly your illiac crest should be about right in middle of the waist belt. Another way to determine waist belt fit is the waist belt buckle should be about right over your belly button.

3.Shoulder straps and Load lifter straps
After you have the waist belt snug you’ll want to adjust the shoulder straps and load lifters. Leave the sternum strap loose and tighten your shoulder straps; the easiest way to do this is pull down and back on the webbing at the bottom of the strap. The point where the shoulder strap attaches to the pack should extend no more than 1-2 inches below the top of your shoulder and wrap snugly around your shoulder. When this is snug tighten the load lifter straps. You may need to adjust the load lifters so when you tighten them they pull up and lift the load. Use the slider on top of the shoulder strap to adjust the load lifter. Load lifter straps should be snug. Don’t tighten them so much that they pull the shoulder strap up off your shoulder. The top of the shoulder strap and load lifter strap should create a 45 degree angle when properly adjusted.

4.Sternum Strap and Waist belt stabilizer straps
The sternum strap should be located in a comfortable position across your chest. Ideally this will be just below your clavical. Again keep this snug, if you over-tighten it could interfere with your breathing. Finally, you’ll want to snug the stabilizer strap on your waist belt. This brings the load in tighter to your back.

How to Wash / Clean a JanSport Backpack?
Our backpacks are hand wash only. You can spot clean with a damp cloth or hand wash and then air or line dry. Please do not use detergent or bleach.

How do I pack my pack?
Learn how to properly pack and stow everything you need for a multiday hike in a way that balances your equipment and helps you manage the load.

Loading and packing your pack is key to carrying your load comfortably. Learn how to load your pack in four easy steps.

First, fill the bottom of your pack with your lightest gear. This is great place for your sleeping bag, down jacket and/or tent. You can also fill this area with clothes you know you will not need during the day.

Second, the main pack bag should be packed so that heavy items like cook gear and food are in the middle and close to your back, lighter weight items on the outside.

Third, the lightest items and items you’ll need quick access to during the day like rain gear and lunch should be packed last and at the top of the pack. The pack lid is also a great place to store items that are small and need to be accessed quickly. Your goal is to get “everything”in the pack bag. You’ll be more comfortable and your stuff more secure this way.

Finally, once you’ve got everything packed, use the compression straps to compress and snug the load tightly as possible to keep things from moving around while you hike.

LIMITED WARRANTY POLICY AND GUIDELINES

Trust is built over time, so for more than 50 years JanSport has designed packs that last, to go everywhere you go, see what you see, and carry what you need. We stand by the quality and durability of every pack we make, and since we’ve been doing that since 1967, that is a guarantee you can stand by.

We build our products to last over extended periods of use, but inevitably everything does eventually wear out. So, when your pack wears out as all things do, you’ll know you’ve gotten the most out of your gear and your experience. JanSport branded products covered by this warranty are warranted to the original owner or to the person who has received a JanSport branded product as a gift, against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for up to 30 years from the purchase of the product, except for certain exclusions identified below.

This warranty applies only to all JanSport branded equipment (e.g., packs, bags, pouches, totes, cases) purchased from authorised dealers. The warranty does not apply to pins, patches, or related accessories. Please carefully review the exclusions to confirm whether your product is covered. If your product covered by this warranty fails due to a manufacturing defect, we will repair it without charge, or replace it, at our discretion. Only unaltered and unmodified items and original workmanship are covered. Improper or incorrectly performed maintenance or repairs will void this warranty. This warranty does not cover any damage caused by misuse (such as transportation of unusual items), negligence accidents, abrasion, exposure to extreme temperatures, solvents, acids, water, rips, UV degradation, normal wear and tear, transport damage (by airlines, for example), improper care or the natural breakdown of colours and materials over extended time and use. Damage not covered under warranty may be repaired for a reasonable rate and a fee will be charged for return shipping.

WHAT DOES MATERIAL, COMPONENT, AND WORKMANSHIP DEFECT MEAN?

Materials and components refer to zippers, buckles and fabrics, etc. Workmanship refers to seams and construction. Defects in materials, components, or workmanship are covered for up to 30 years from the purchase of the product.

WHAT IS SPECIFICALLY COVERED?

The products eligible for the 30 year warranty are covered to the original owner or to the person who has received a JanSport branded product as a gift, for up to 30 years from the purchase of the product. Inevitably, well used (and well loved!) products will eventually wear out—fabrics will deteriorate, and colours will fade.

WHAT IS NOT COVERED?

Consequently, we will cover your product against defect and malfunction until such a time that it has been used and worn out beyond reasonable repair. This warranty does not cover normal wear and tear or the natural breakdown of colours and materials over extended time and use. “Normal wear and tear” generally mean the wear and tear caused by the expected use of the bag over an extended period of time. There are a few factors that determine the end of “product life”, including the following:

  • Fabric—if the fabric is discoloured, degraded, de-laminated or deteriorated, we may determine this to be end of “product life”’;
  • If a major component fails due to extended use (such as a handle, wheel or zipper) we may deem the product to have met its full life cycle.

WHAT IF I SPILLED LIQUIDS INSIDE MY BAG?

Liquids spilled inside packs causing deterioration to fabric and/or materials will not be covered.
